\u201cKorean War P.O.W\u2019s must come home no matter what\u201d<\/p>\n

Today June 25, 2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War(1950-1953). On that morning, 135,000 North Koreans swept across the 38th parallel, invading South Korea.<\/p>\n

The cease-fire and armistice took place 27th July, 1953.<\/p>\n

During the negotiation of the cease-fire, the top issue was how to exchange the POWs. That was a big issue throughout this war for three years.<\/p>\n

The North Koreans and China insisted they wanted to exchange all-for-all basis. But United Nations Command insisted on volunteer for volunteer.<\/p>\n

N. Korea sent only 13,404 of the prisoners, of which 3,846 were U.S. Army, and the rest of them mainly South Korean army.<\/p>\n

The problem is they sent back to the South side only 13,404 out of 92,970. The rest of them? They kept saying they wanted to stay. I mean, it is tricky.<\/p>\n

And whenever the South Korean government has the occasion to raise the issue, they (North Korea) simply denies they have any standing on the issue, and denies there are any POWs because under the agreement, they sent back all who wanted to go, so there’s not any remaining. But this was not true.<\/p>\n

In 1994, the first POW who had escaped from N. Korea, Lieutenant Cho, Chang-Ho shocked us with the information about our 78,636 POW\u2019s detained in N. Korea after the war. As of 2013, 78 POW\u2019s escaped from N. Korea.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Korea, there are approximately 500 POWs still alive being held captive in North Korea as 2004.<\/p>\n

I’d like to emphasize that they fought for democracy. They fought for freedom. They stopped the expansion of communism on the Korean peninsula. They fought under the U.N. flag.<\/p>\n

They are heroes. Nevertheless, they are still in captive, and most people have forgotten their existence. We must to rescue these people.<\/p>\n

They are fast fading away as days go by. Are they fading away from our consciousness, too?<\/p>\n

All nations and peace-loving people have an obligation to rescue these innocent people, and to remember the history of Korean War P.O.W. Thank you very much.<\/p>\n
